Published by ncmom at 1:53 pm under Uncategorized Edit This

In case you haven’t paid attention to my blogs let me go ahead and remind you… I love to read, my kids love to read, my fiance is coming around to it and soon who knows maybe I’ll get the dogs reading :)

If you find that you’re stuck indoors this Fourth of July or you just don’t want to be bothered by the whole cooking out, parades, and people then curl up on the couch and celebrate the fourth with a good Fourth of July book! Here a few that I found interesting from Barnes & Noble, there are a few for the kids and for us big kids.

~The Fourth of July by Joyce Linvingston

Synopsis

When Treva Jordan inherits her beloved aunt’s house in Bristol, Rhode Island, it becomes her summer project. Treva plans to sell the place, but when a fire erupts the first night, followed by other mysterious incidents, she wonders if someone is trying to frighten her into leaving. Tank LaFrenz has been asking God to send him the right woman. When he turns up at the fire at the old Gunther place and sees the young woman he’d met at his friend’s wedding, he wonders if she could be the one. But how can he convince her he’s not trying to harm her? Can this Fourth of July be the start of independence from the past?

~ Fourth of July Mice! by Bethany Roberts (ages 5-6)

Synopsis

It’s the most patriotic of all holidays-Independence Day! The Holiday Mice take part in all the activities that make the Fourth of July fun: a parade, a picnic, a baseball game and sack race, and a refreshing dip in the stream. Even Mr. Mouse, the littlest mouse’s special toy, joins in the festivities. The best part of all comes at the end of the day: a spectacular fireworks show!
Packed with plenty of red, white, and blue and featuring the four Holiday Mice at their most adorable, this story about our nation’s birthday will delight readers young and old alike.

~The Fourth of July Story by Alice Dalgliesh (4-8)

Synopsis

What happened on the Fourth of July long before there were fireworks and parades? Alice Dalgliesh takes young readers back to revolutionary times, back to the colonists’ desire for freedom and the creation of the Declaration of Independence.

Simple text captures the excitement of the era, telling how word of Independence travelled up and down the thirteen colonies, touching the lives of everyday people throughout the land. Like all of Alice Dalgliesh’s work, The Fourth of July Story remains an American classic

~Fireworks at the FBI by Ron Roy (6-9)

Synopsis

KC and her friend Marshall are watching the fourth of July fireworks with the president of the United States when they see smoke and sparks in the distance. It’s more fireworks, but they are not part of the holiday plan. They’re coming from the FBI Building! Is it just a prank? Or are these fireworks masking a bigger mystery . . . and a capital crime?
~Born on the Fourth of July by Ron Kovic

Synopsis

“A great, courageous fellow, a man of deep moral convictions and an uncompromising disposition.”-John Kerry on Ron Kovic

“As relevant as ever, this book is an education. Ron is a true American, and his great heart and hard-won wisdom shine through these pages.” -Oliver Stone, filmmaker

Born on the Fourth of July brings back the era of the Vietnam War at a time when the Establishment is trying to make the nation forget what they call the “Vietnam syndrome.” Ron Kovic’s memoir is written with poetic passion and grips your attention from the very first page to the last. It is a classic of antiwar literature and I hope it will be read by large numbers of young people, who will be both sobered and inspired by his story. -Howard Zinn

“If you want to understand the everlasting reverberations of our war in Vietnam and how it impacts our current events, you must read this book.” -LARRY HEINEMANN

“There is no book more relevant in the 21st century to healing the wound of Vietnam, which continues to bring so much pain to our country, as reflected in the last presidential election . . . It remains to Kovic to remind us that history matters, and that the cost of our high follies persists.” -ROBERT SCHEER, Los Angeles Times columnist

~Takedown by Brad Thor

Synopsis

July 4th weekend, New York City: As thousands of holiday travelers make their way out of Manhattan, a flawlessly executed terrorist attack plunges the city into a maelstrom of panic and death.
