Mom can’t Santa have hot chocolate this year?

Published by ncmom at 6:01 pm under Uncategorized Edit This

What is it about the holidays that makes you want to bake? I could spend all day in the kitchen baking cakes, candies, and little snowman cookies if time would allow it to happen that is. My mom usually does the Christmas baking with the kids but I’m not sure she’ll be able to do it this year so I’ve been looking online for a few recipes to try. I know my daughter is ready to bake Santa some cookies and my son wants to give him hot chocolate instead of milk!

“Mom can’t we give Santa hot chocolate this year”

“no son it would be cold by the time Santa gets here”

With a sparkle in his eye “we could put it out at midnight”

Now this is coming from an 11 year old that is trying hard to keep believing in Santa and has always been told that when he stops believing then Chirstmas ends. He is trying so hard to hold on to that belief that he’s asking all kinds of questions.

“Son Santa doesn’t always come at midnight he comes when you’re asleep and he’s made his rounds to this point”

“so why can’t you give it to him, aren’t you up when he comes?” \

“No I’m not awake when Santa comes”

“HMMMM so you don’t get to shake hands with Santa?”

“No Brandon I don’t see Santa I’m as surprised as you are to find that he’s come during the night and we are giving him milk because that’s what he likes, didn’t you listen to all the Christmas stories?!”

Smiling from ear to ear “Sure mom”

I really don’t know whether to laugh at him or cry. I know he has to grow up but in my house Santa is real and that will never change. If I allow his spirit to be forgotten then Christmas is no longer fun.

So this year we are continuing with our milk and cookies, I’m wondering why my smarty pants son didn’t ask why Santa likes milk so much when it’s hot by the time he gets here!

Chocolate Cups:
6 ounces semisweet chocolate — cut into pieces

Filling:
6 tablespoons dairy eggnog — (do not use canned)
1 (11 ounce) package white vanilla chips
3/4 teaspoon nutmeg

Melt chocolate in small saucepan over low heat. With 3/4 inch brush, coat inside of 30 paper candy cups with melted chocolate. Refrigerate 15 minutes or until set.

Heat eggnog in small saucepan over low heat just until eggnog comes to a simmer. Remove from heat. Stir in vanilla chips until melted. Refrigerate about 30 minutes or until mixture begins to firm up.

Spoon about 1 teaspoon eggnog filling evenly into each chocolate cup. Refrigerate or freeze until ready to serve.

Just before serving, sprinkle nutmeg over filling in cups. If desired, peel paper cups from truffles before serving.
